THE OBJECTIVE of The River and the Drum exercise is to choose a topic and write nonstop for an allotted amount of time, generally about three minutes. First, you write a long, flowing, 'river'-style sentence, and then write short, pulsating, 'drum' beat-style sentences that cannot exceed a four-word length. It's fun and can often expose ideas that are hidden deep within. You should try it.
Here are some examples of the River and the Drum exercise with a most intriguing topic...MONEY.
Money smells good. Money isn't everything. I love getting money. I love sharing money. Money buys food. Money buys my shoes. Money doesn't buy everything. Money is only material. Money comes and goes. Money isn't loyal. (time's up!) (Kysha Barbel, A DRUM)
People with a lot of money are lucky because they can wear whatever they want and they can eat whatever they want and they can do whatever they want but the ones who haven’t got the money, one of the most important things in the world, which… (time's up!) (Jessica Warnken, A RIVER)
You are vain. You are arrogant. It is causing that. It won’t let go. It has your mind. It has possessed you. Be careful. It isn’t everything. It’s not your life. Maybe it could help. Don’t depend on it. It’s not your friend. It will turn. It won’t be there. Someone could take it. Then what? Where do you go? Do you have friends? Or did you trust? Trust too much? Trust in it? Live for the memories. The memories without it. It’s not necessary. You can do it. (time's up!)(Riley Whitworth, A DRUM)
What’s it for? We use it. Always. We can’t escape. It tempts us. We need it. Survival. We can’t go long. Without a taste. It never leaves. Always near. Always watching. Stealthy. It sneaks. Through our fingers. Out of our pockets. Always exchanged. It is our drive. It takes over. We give up everything. Time. Effort. For it. Nothing happens without it. Nothing exists. And for what? Money. (time's up!)(Benjamin Cottam, A DRUM)
Money is a strange thing that is a light green but can sometimes be a tannish brown color that has some of our most famous presidents on them so that we may be able to remember them and what they did for our county but maybe some of them may not of done some very good things yet it's still very nice to remember who they were but its also weird because how we have the technology to put someones face from so long ago on a very thin colored paper.(time's up)(Brayden Butler, A RIVER)
Money. Sweet old money. It is the best. Nothing will replace it. Everyone loves it. People die without it. People die for it. Dallon owes me money. Lots and lots. About $500. Jk. (time's up)( Evens Fullmer, A DRUM)
Money can be useful. Or it can’t. Maybe it is. Maybe it's not. That isn’t for me. Many people use it. Some can’t. Lots love it. Some find it worthless. Others spend it all. Others save it. Many can’t find it. Some get it free. It is born. It is killed. It is wasted. It is cherished. It is paper. It is a savior. Money has a cost. That you can’t pay. (Jackson Lee, A DRUM)
